1. What Is a Product Feed and How Does It Drive Revenue?

A product feed (also known as a product catalog or merchant data feed) is a structured digital inventory manifest containing all commercial attributes of your store's items. Rather than search engines manually scraping individual product pages, shopping channels consume this machine-readable file to populate dynamic product ads, price comparisons, and organic product rich results.

Major digital channels rely on product feeds every second:

  • Google Shopping & Performance Max: Displays images, prices, and star ratings across Google Search, YouTube, and Gmail.
  • Meta Commerce Manager: Powers Instagram Shopping tags and retargeting carousels across Facebook.
  • TikTok Shop & Pinterest Catalogs: Populates shoppable pins and live video product links.
  • Affiliate Networks & Marketplaces: Synchronizes availability with Rakuten, CJ, ShareASale, and price comparison engines.

2. Anatomy of the 7 Mandatory Attributes

Across all major platforms, seven core attributes form the non-negotiable foundation of any viable catalog:

1. id (SKU)

Your unique alphanumeric stock-keeping unit. Must be permanent and globally unique across all product variants (colors, sizes). Never re-assign a deleted item's ID to a new product.

2. title

Product headline (recommended 40-70 characters; max 150 characters). Include brand, core product noun, and key differentiating attributes (e.g. "Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 40 Men's Running Shoes - Black / Size 10").

3. price

Numeric price amount combined with a 3-letter ISO 4217 currency code (e.g., 149.99 USD). The feed price must match the landing page price exactly at crawl time.

4. link

Direct landing page URL starting with https://. Do not link to collection or search pages; the destination must let the customer add that specific variant to the shopping cart.

5. image_link

Public HTTPS URL pointing to the main product photo on a clean white or neutral background. Avoid watermarks, borders, and promotional badge overlays.

6. availability

Stock status. In Google Merchant Center, valid values are strictly in_stock, out_of_stock, preorder, and backorder.

7. brand / gtin

Standard barcodes (UPC, EAN, ISBN) and manufacturer brand names. Providing legitimate GTINs unlocks up to a 40% higher click-through rate in Google Shopping.

3. Pre-Sync Validation: Why Offline Auditing Is Critical

Submitting an unvalidated product feed directly to advertising platforms is dangerous. When Google Merchant Center detects systematic errors—such as missing tax/shipping data, price discrepancies, or 404 image URLs—it issues account-level warnings and can freeze your entire advertising campaign.

By auditing your catalog using Silixen's browser-based validator prior to uploading, you catch syntax errors, duplicate SKUs, and formula injection vulnerabilities privately without risking account strikes.
